Shiver — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Shiver reading order?

Read Shiver (2009), then Linger (2010), then Forever (2011). All three must be read in order. Sinner (2014) is a companion novel following secondary characters from the trilogy and can be read after Forever or as a standalone.

How many Shiver books are there?

The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater consists of three books: Shiver (2009), Linger (2010), and Forever (2011). Sinner (2014) is a companion novel following Cole and Isabel.

Is Shiver similar to Twilight?

Shiver is frequently compared to Twilight — both feature a teenage girl falling in love with a paranormal boy, an elemental trigger for transformation (cold for the wolves vs. sunlight for the Cullens), and a threat to the relationship from the paranormal world. Stiefvater's prose is more literary and atmospheric than Meyer's, and the romance is equally central to both.

What makes the wolves in Shiver different?

The werewolves in Shiver shift between human and wolf form based on temperature rather than the full moon — they are wolves in winter and humans in summer. As they age, they spend more and more time as wolves until eventually they can no longer return to human form. This creates a ticking-clock element to Grace and Sam's romance.
