Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1966) by Tom Stoppard is the play that made his reputation — Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, the two minor characters from Hamlet, experiencing what happens to them in the gaps between their scenes in Shakespeare's play. The play investigates free will, determinism, and theatrical existence through two figures who are entirely subject to the plot that surrounds them. Premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in 1966; made into a film by Stoppard in 1990 with Gary Oldman and Tim Roth.
