John Updike's Rabbit tetralogy — Rabbit, Run (1960), Rabbit Redux (1971), Rabbit Is Rich (1981), and Rabbit at Rest (1990), with the novella epilogue Rabbit Remembered (2000) — is one of the great sustained American literary achievements: four novels tracking Harry 'Rabbit' Angstrom from his late twenties through his death in his late fifties, using one ordinary man's life as a lens through which to observe four decades of American social history. Rabbit Is Rich won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award simultaneously in 1982; Rabbit at Rest won a second Pulitzer in 1991. Updike, who won the Pulitzer twice and the National Book Award twice, was the most prolific and formally accomplished of the major American writers of his generation, also the author of the Bech novels, the Couples (1968), and the Witches of Eastwick (1984).
