About Pot-Bouille
Zola's tenth Rougon-Macquart novel (1882) — the story of Octave Mouret's rise through the Parisian bourgeoisie by seducing the women of his middle-class apartment building. A savage satirical exposure of bourgeois hypocrisy and the direct prequel to The Ladies' Paradise (1883), in which Mouret founds his great department store.
