Susanna Clarke's Piranesi (2020) is a standalone novel unlike anything else in contemporary fantasy. Piranesi lives alone in a vast House — a building of infinite halls and tidal hallways, every surface lined with statues, including a hall filled with stars. He keeps meticulous journals about the House's ecology. He knows of only two other people who exist. Then he finds entries in his own journals that he has no memory of writing, and begins to question who he is and how he got there. Piranesi won the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2021. It is Clarke's second novel, completely unrelated to Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
