Geraldine Brooks's People of the Book (2008) is the novel that traces a rare Jewish illuminated manuscript — the Sarajevo Haggadah — across five centuries and five countries, from its creation in fifteenth-century Seville through its appearance in Vienna in 1894 to its survival during the siege of Sarajevo in 1992. Inspired by the real Sarajevo Haggadah, Brooks interweaves the stories of the book's successive owners with the story of its present-day conservator. Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for March (2005).
