About Passing

Nella Larsen's Passing (1929) is a standalone novella following Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry, two light-skinned Black women in 1920s Harlem — one of whom has been passing as white and is married to a racist white man who doesn't know her origins. A central text of the Harlem Renaissance, rediscovered by feminist scholars in the 1970s and adapted into a 2021 film.
