About Paradise Lost

John Milton's Paradise Lost (1667) is the greatest long poem in the English language — a twelve-book blank verse epic retelling Satan's rebellion and the fall of Adam and Eve from Eden. Written after Milton's blindness and the failure of the Puritan Commonwealth, the poem argues for divine justice and human freedom while giving Satan some of the most compelling speeches in English literature. Companion works include Paradise Regained (1671) and Samson Agonistes (1671).
