Cormac McCarthy's Outer Dark (1968) is his second novel and the most formally gothic — a man who impregnates his sister in the Tennessee hill country and abandons the infant in the woods; the sister goes searching for the child while the man pursues his own shadow, and three nameless, murderous figures move through the landscape killing everything they encounter. McCarthy was writing in the tradition of Flannery O'Connor and William Faulkner, and Outer Dark is his most stylistically concentrated early work, with the three tramps functioning as an almost supernatural evil that cannot be explained or confronted. It received almost no attention on publication but is now recognized as essential McCarthy.
