About Oliver Twist
Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist (1837–39) is his second novel — the story of the orphan Oliver, born in a workhouse and drawn into a London criminal gang led by the master criminal Fagin, and the first English novel to take a child as protagonist and address directly the conditions of the urban poor. A social reform classic that established Dickens's reputation as a campaigner for the poor. Recommended reading order: Oliver Twist → Great Expectations → Bleak House.
