About North and South

Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South (1854) follows Margaret Hale, a clergyman's daughter who moves from the rural south of England to the industrial north and falls into antagonistic relationship with the mill owner John Thornton. One of the great Victorian novels of social conscience and romantic conflict, and the novel that established Gaskell alongside Dickens and Eliot as a major Victorian writer.
