About Nine Stories

J.D. Salinger's Nine Stories (1953) is his only story collection — nine stories originally published in The New Yorker between 1948 and 1953. It contains 'A Perfect Day for Bananafish' (introducing Seymour Glass), 'For Esmé — with Love and Squalor' (widely considered the finest story about the Second World War), 'Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut,' 'The Laughing Man,' and five others. The collection opens with the Zen koan: 'We know the sound of two hands clapping. But what is the sound of one hand clapping?' — framing the whole set's interest in spiritual authenticity and the impossibility of communicating genuine experience. Published between The Catcher in the Rye (1951) and Franny and Zooey (1961).
