About Night and Day
Virginia Woolf's Night and Day (1919) is her second and most comedic novel — a drawing-room comedy of manners about marriage, independence, and the inner life in Edwardian London. The most Jane Austen-like of Woolf's works, it follows Katharine Hilbery, who secretly wants to study mathematics while everyone expects her to marry and work on her grandfather's biography. Woolf described it as a deliberate exercise in the conventional novel before her departure into full experimental fiction with Jacob's Room.
