Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children (1981) is a standalone novel following Saleem Sinai, one of 1,001 children born at the moment of Indian independence at midnight on August 15, 1947, each with supernatural powers. Winner of the Booker Prize in 1981 and the 'Booker of Bookers' twice, it is the defining novel of postcolonial magical realism in English.
