About Middlemarch

George Eliot's Middlemarch (1871–1872) is a standalone novel following four interconnected stories in a fictional English midlands town — Dorothea Brooke's disastrous marriage to the elderly scholar Casaubon, and Lydgate's medical career destroyed by his equally ill-advised marriage. Widely considered the greatest English novel.
