Melmoth the Wanderer (1820) — Charles Maturin's last great Gothic romance: John Melmoth, who sold his soul for 150 extra years of life, wanders the earth offering release from suffering in exchange for the soul of whoever will take his place. Organized as nested narratives spanning centuries. Oscar Wilde took the name 'Sebastian Melmoth' after prison in homage to this novel.
