About Macbeth
William Shakespeare's Macbeth (c. 1606) is the shortest and most intense of the major tragedies — a Scottish general murders the king to take the throne, guided by his ambitious wife and the prophecies of three witches, then descends into paranoia as power destroys everything around him. The play's three witches, Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking, and Macbeth's soliloquies are among the most famous moments in English drama. Companion works include Hamlet, King Lear, and Richard III.
