William Golding's Lord of the Flies (1954) is a standalone novel following a group of British schoolboys stranded on an uninhabited island whose attempt to govern themselves collapses into violence. Golding's first novel and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983; one of the most widely taught novels in the English-speaking world.
