Little Dorrit (1855–57) is Charles Dickens's most explicitly political novel after Bleak House — a sustained attack on government bureaucracy (the Circumlocution Office), debtors' prison, and financial speculation, set partly in the Marshalsea where Dickens's own father was imprisoned when Dickens was twelve. The story of Amy Dorrit, who has grown up in the prison caring for her father, is one of the most quietly affecting portraits in all his fiction.
