Libra Reading Order
Don DeLillo's Libra (1988) is the most celebrated American political novel of its decade — a novelization of the conspiracy behind the assassination of John F. Kennedy, following Lee Harvey Oswald from his boyhood through his defection to the Soviet Union and his return to Dallas, alongside a group of CIA operatives planning an assassination attempt that gets out of control. DeLillo spent three years researching the Warren Commission testimony and writing the novel, which was praised for its formal ambition, its psychologically complex portrait of Oswald, and its treatment of conspiracy as the central fact of American public life. It is widely considered DeLillo's finest novel alongside White Noise and Underworld.

Libra — Frequently Asked Questions
Is Libra based on real events?
Yes, but it is a work of fiction. DeLillo researched the Warren Commission materials extensively and draws on documented facts — Oswald's biography, the principal figures in the Dallas conspiracy theories, the timeline of events — but creates fictional scenes, dialogue, and interior life that are entirely invented. DeLillo includes an 'Author's Note' stating that 'This is a work of the imagination' and acknowledging that some of Oswald's known views and statements are incorporated into the novel. The novel does not endorse any specific conspiracy theory but treats the assassination as an event that exceeded any single explanation.
