Le Jardin des supplices (Torture Garden, 1899) by Octave Mirbeau is the most deliberately transgressive French novel of the nineteenth century — a structured provocation that uses the conventions of the colonial adventure novel and the erotic garden narrative to attack bourgeois civilization's hypocrisies. The novel begins with a satirical prologue set at a French dinner party at which politicians and intellectuals discuss murder, torture, and colonial violence with complete complacency; the narrator then travels to China and encounters Clara, an English aristocrat who has discovered the garden of a Chinese mandarin — a space of exquisite beauty dedicated entirely to torture. Clara leads the narrator through the garden's tortures with a combination of sexual excitement and aesthetic appreciation that Mirbeau uses to argue that civilization's refinement and its barbarism are the same thing. The torture descriptions are deliberately extreme — Mirbeau intended them to be unreadable as erotica, forcing the reader to confront what they are actually looking at. The novel was immediately suppressed and equally immediately famous; it became a touchstone for the Decadent movement's rejection of bourgeois moral complacency and influenced the Surrealists. Mirbeau was also a sharp political journalist, and Le Jardin des supplices is simultaneously an aesthetic provocation and a political pamphlet against colonialism and the European self-image.
