About D.H. Lawrence

D.H. Lawrence (1885–1930) was the most controversial major English novelist of the early twentieth century — a coal miner's son from Nottinghamshire whose fiction explored sexuality, class, and the industrial destruction of organic life with unprecedented directness. Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928), privately printed in Florence and legally suppressed in Britain until the landmark 1960 Penguin trial, is his most famous work. Sons and Lovers (1913) is his most autobiographical; Women in Love (1920) is the most fully achieved. The Rainbow (1915) and Women in Love form a two-novel sequence following the Brangwen family. Lawrence died of tuberculosis in France in 1930 at forty-four.
