La Rochefoucauld's 1665 Maximes are the supreme achievement of the French moralist tradition — 504 compressed sentences unmasking amour-propre (self-love) as the hidden motor of all virtue, courage, gratitude, and friendship. The aphorism reduced to its sharpest point: 'Our virtues are most often only disguised vices.'
