Do I need to read the Rougon-Macquart novels in order?

The Rougon-Macquart cycle (twenty novels, 1871–93) can be read in several different orders, and Zola himself gave conflicting advice on the subject. The most common approach is publication order, which begins with La Fortune des Rougon (1871) and ends with Le Docteur Pascal (1893); this has the advantage of following Zola's narrative logic and allows the reader to see how the cycle developed over two decades. A second approach is thematic order: beginning with the most famous and accessible novels (Germinal, L'Assommoir, Nana) and then reading backward into the less famous. A third approach is the 'skeleton' order recommended by many readers: La Fortune des Rougon (the origin story), then two or three of the most famous novels (L'Assommoir, Germinal, Nana), then Le Docteur Pascal (the closing summary), then the remaining novels as desired. The cycle does not require complete reading to be rewarding: each novel is substantially self-contained, the hereditary connections between the characters are always explained where needed, and the political history of the Second Empire that frames the whole cycle is introduced in each novel as required. The only novel that genuinely requires knowing the others is Le Docteur Pascal (1893), which is explicitly a retrospective summary of the entire cycle.
