La ciudad y los perros (The Time of the Hero, 1963) by Mario Vargas Llosa is the explosive debut that announced the Peruvian novelist as one of the central voices of the Latin American Boom — a novel set in Lima's Leoncio Prado military academy that used the full formal arsenal of the modernist novel (multiple narrators, scrambled chronology, unreliable voices) to expose the violence, machismo, and corruption at the heart of Peruvian society. A group of cadets at the academy — known by animal nicknames: the Jaguar, Poet (Boa), Slave, Alberto — form a gang, steal exam questions to sell, and become entangled in the death of a cadet named Arana (the Slave). The novel's central question is whether the Slave was murdered by the Jaguar, and whether Alberto's attempt to report the death is suppressed by the institution. But the novel's real subject is larger: the Leoncio Prado military academy is a microcosm of Peruvian society — its class hierarchies, its racial tensions, its machismo code, its institutional corruption. The academy admits boys from all social classes and forces them into proximity and competition, and the result reveals the social contradictions that the Peruvian establishment would prefer to keep hidden. The Peruvian military had six hundred copies of the novel burned on the parade ground of the very school where it is set, and accused Vargas Llosa of being a Communist agent. The burning made the novel famous throughout Latin America.
