Il Gattopardo (The Leopard, 1958) by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa is the great Italian novel of the Risorgimento — a meditation on decline, aristocratic pride, and the paradox of change that preserves. Published posthumously (Lampedusa died in 1957, and two publishers rejected the novel before Feltrinelli accepted it the year after his death), it became an instant classic and remains one of the most widely read Italian novels in the world. Don Fabrizio Corbera, Prince of Salinas, watches the old Sicilian aristocratic order dissolve before the advancing Garibaldian forces of Italian unification in 1860. His response — 'For things to remain the same, everything must change' — is the novel's central paradox, articulated by his nephew Tancredi, who joins Garibaldi precisely to ensure that the class that produced him continues to rule under the new dispensation. Lampedusa's prose is extraordinarily rich: the novel's famous set pieces — the ball at Donnafugata, the fox hunt at dawn, the Prince's death — have the density and sensory completeness of Proust. The novel is also a private elegy: Lampedusa, who wrote it in the last years of his life after seeing his own ancestral palace in Palermo bombed to rubble in 1943, was in some sense writing his own obituary and that of the world that produced him. It is a novel about time — geological time, historical time, the time of a family's generations — and about what survives and what disappears when empires fall.
