I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed, 1827; revised 1840–42) by Alessandro Manzoni is the foundational novel of modern Italian literature — the work that effectively created literary Italian as a unified national language at a time when Italy was still a geographic expression containing dozens of dialects and foreign rulers. The novel is set in Lombardy in 1628–30, under Spanish domination, during a period of plague, famine, and foreign wars. Renzo Tramaglino and Lucia Mondella, two silk workers from a village on Lake Como, are prevented from marrying by the local bully Don Rodrigo, who has taken a fancy to Lucia; the novel follows their separation, their tribulations under the various powers that seek to control them, and their eventual reunion after the plague of 1630. Manzoni's achievement was to write a genuinely popular novel — one that could be read and understood by all classes of Italians — while embedding in it a serious philosophical and theological vision about the relationship between providence, history, and human suffering. The novel's providential architecture (things work out for the good and humble, not through their own virtue but through the mysterious workings of grace) gives it an unusual moral seriousness. Its historical reconstruction of seventeenth-century Lombardy was meticulous: Manzoni spent years in archives, and the novel's account of the 1630 plague is based on careful historical sources. The revised 1840–42 edition, in which Manzoni rewrote the novel's prose to conform to Florentine Tuscan (the chosen standard for written Italian), is the version read today.
