His Dark Materials Reading Order
Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials is a complete three-book fantasy trilogy that begins as a children's adventure and deepens into one of the most philosophically ambitious and theologically provocative works of speculative fiction written in the last 50 years. The trilogy follows Lyra Belacqua, a girl raised in an alternate Oxford where every human's soul takes the form of an animal companion called a dæmon, as she discovers that children are going missing and that the forces she thought were protecting her are the ones she should fear. The trilogy must be read in order. Pullman has since written two additional books in the companion series The Book of Dust.

His Dark Materials — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the His Dark Materials reading order?
Read The Golden Compass (1995), then The Subtle Knife (1997), then The Amber Spyglass (2000). The trilogy must be read in order. Philip Pullman has also written The Book of Dust, a companion series: La Belle Sauvage (2017) is a prequel and can be read before or after the original trilogy; The Secret Commonwealth (2019) is a sequel set 20 years later and should be read after.
How many His Dark Materials books are there?
The His Dark Materials trilogy has three books. Philip Pullman has also written two volumes of The Book of Dust, a companion series: La Belle Sauvage (2017) and The Secret Commonwealth (2019). A third Book of Dust volume has been announced but not yet published.
Is His Dark Materials appropriate for children?
The Golden Compass is often shelved in children's fiction, but the series grows significantly darker and more philosophically complex in The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. The trilogy grapples directly with religious authority, death, consciousness, and loss. Most readers recommend it for ages 12 and up, with the caveat that The Amber Spyglass especially is emotionally demanding.
What is a dæmon in His Dark Materials?
In Lyra's world, every human has a dæmon — an animal companion that is, in some sense, an externalized soul. Children's dæmons can change form; adults' dæmons have settled into a permanent shape. The nature of dæmons, and what they represent about consciousness and identity, is one of the central mysteries of the trilogy.
