About Go Tell It on the Mountain

James Baldwin's Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953) is a standalone debut novel following fourteen-year-old John Grimes in Harlem on a single day — his birthday — as he undergoes a religious experience at his stepfather's storefront church, with long retrospective chapters tracing the histories of the adults around him back through the Jim Crow South. Closely autobiographical and considered one of the great American debut novels.
