About Germinal
Zola's Germinal (1885) is the great labor novel of the nineteenth century — the story of Étienne Lantier's radicalization at the Voreux coal mine and the disastrous miners' strike he leads. The thirteenth novel in the Rougon-Macquart cycle but entirely self-contained, Germinal is the summit of Zola's naturalist project.
