About East of Eden
John Steinbeck's East of Eden (1952) is his most ambitious novel — an epic multigenerational saga following two California families across several generations, intertwined with a meditation on the Biblical story of Cain and Abel and the word 'timshel' (thou mayest). Steinbeck called it 'the book I have been working toward all my life.' His other major novels include The Grapes of Wrath (1939), Of Mice and Men (1937), and Cannery Row (1945).
