Frank Herbert's Dune Saga is the foundation of modern science fiction. The original six novels by Herbert form a complete philosophical arc spanning millennia. Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have since published over a dozen prequel and sequel novels expanding the universe. Most readers read only Herbert's original six; the expanded universe novels are optional.
Where to start
Start with Dune (1965) — the novel that started everything. Herbert's first book is the most accessible and most beloved. The sequels get progressively more esoteric; many readers read only the first book or the first three.

Should I read Dune before watching the Denis Villeneuve films?
Yes — the films are close adaptations of the first novel. The book adds depth to Mentat abilities, the Bene Gesserit, and Paul's internal voice that the films can only hint at. Reading the book before or after the first film both work well.
Is Dune Messiah worth reading?
Dune Messiah is a short, dark deconstruction of the chosen-one story Herbert accidentally created in Dune — it is deliberately unsatisfying if you wanted more heroics, but essential if you want Herbert's full vision. Read it expecting a tragedy, not a sequel.
