About Dombey and Son

Dombey and Son (1846–48) is Charles Dickens's most psychologically ambitious early novel — often called the first Dickens novel to be fully planned in advance and the work that marks his transition from the relatively picaresque early novels to the mature social panoramas of Bleak House. The portrait of Mr. Paul Dombey, the cold, proud merchant whose emotional incapacity destroys almost everything he loves, is one of Dickens's finest sustained studies of character failure.
