What is the difference between deep work and shallow work?
Newport defines deep work as 'professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit,' producing outputs that create new value, improve your skills, and are hard to replicate. Shallow work is 'noncognitively demanding, logistical-style tasks, often performed while distracted,' producing outputs that can be replicated easily and contribute little value. Newport's argument is that the modern workplace has systematically traded deep work for shallow work — email, meetings, and social media — in a way that makes most knowledge workers less productive and less valuable than they could be.
