About David Copperfield

David Copperfield (1849–50) was Charles Dickens's own favorite among his novels — the most autobiographical of his works, in which he transformed the shame and trauma of his childhood into the story of David Copperfield's rise from orphaned child worker to celebrated author. The novel that established the Bildungsroman tradition in English fiction and the work that directly inspired countless subsequent coming-of-age novels, from Tolstoy to Salinger.
