Cruelle Énigme Reading Order

Cruelle Énigme (A Cruel Enigma, 1885) by Paul Bourget established him as the leading French psychological novelist of the Third Republic before Le Disciple made him the leading conservative Catholic moralist. The novel is a concentrated study of a young man's love for an older woman who cannot give him the fidelity his passion demands, and of his gradual discovery of her past. Bourget's psychological method — the systematic analysis of states of feeling through a vocabulary derived from his reading of Stendhal, Baudelaire, and Flaubert — is at its most concentrated in Cruelle Énigme: the 'cruel enigma' of the title is the woman's nature, which the young man slowly deciphers through the accumulation of small evidence and intimate observation. The novel belongs to the tradition of the psychological analysis novel (Stendhal's Armance, Adolphe by Constant, Dominique by Fromentin) and represents the most technically accomplished work in that tradition in the 1880s. Bourget's social world — the upper bourgeoisie and aristocracy of the French Third Republic, the summer resort, the Parisian salon — is precisely observed, and the novel's portrait of the social rituals within which the love affair is conducted gives it the texture of a society novel as well as a psychological one.
