Rainbow Rowell's Simon Snow trilogy reimagines the chosen-hero-at-magical-school genre through a YA fantasy lens — and specifically through a same-sex romance between Simon Snow, the chosen one who doesn't quite fit the prophecy, and Baz, his vampire roommate who Simon has always assumed wants to kill him. The trilogy began with Carry On (2015), which originated as a fanfiction-within-fanfiction in Rowell's novel Fangirl. The series is known for its warm humor, its deep affection for fantasy genre conventions, and its central love story.
