About Burmese Days
George Orwell's Burmese Days (1934) is set in a teak-logging district of British Burma in the 1920s, following John Flory, a timber merchant who hates the colonial world he inhabits but cannot bring himself to leave it. Orwell's first published novel and one of the sharpest fictional treatments of British colonialism, drawing directly on his own five years of service in the Indian Imperial Police.
