Black Swan Green Reading Order

Black Swan Green (2006) by David Mitchell is his most autobiographical novel — a coming-of-age story set across thirteen months in 1982 in the small English village of Black Swan Green, narrated by thirteen-year-old Jason Taylor, who is bullied, stammers, writes poetry under a pseudonym, and tries to navigate the minefield of adolescent social hierarchy while his parents' marriage slowly dissolves around him. Where Mitchell's other novels are formally elaborate and structurally experimental, Black Swan Green is deliberately conventional in structure — each chapter covers a month — and deliberately local and intimate in subject. It is often cited as a companion to Catcher in the Rye and About a Boy in the tradition of the honest adolescent novel.
