About Black Boy
Richard Wright's Black Boy (1945) is a classic American autobiography covering his childhood and adolescence in the Jim Crow South — Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas — and his eventual escape north to Chicago. Originally the first half of a longer work titled American Hunger, it is one of the foundational texts of twentieth-century African American literature.
