About Between the Acts
Virginia Woolf's Between the Acts (1941) is her final novel, published posthumously after her suicide, and one of the most formally original conclusions to any major novelist's career. Set on a single June day in 1939, the eve of the Second World War, the novel follows the inhabitants of Pointz Hall as they watch an amateur village pageant retracing English history. The 'between the acts' refers both to the pageant's intervals and to the interval between the two world wars.
