Beloved Reading Order
Toni Morrison's Beloved (1987) is a complete standalone novel. There is no sequel. Set in 1873 Ohio, the novel follows Sethe, a formerly enslaved woman who escaped from Kentucky and killed her infant daughter rather than let her be returned to slavery, and who now lives with the ghost of that daughter in her house. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988 and the Nobel Prize in Literature went to Morrison in 1993, partly in recognition of it. It is widely considered one of the greatest American novels.
