How did the Theranos fraud go undetected for so long?
Carreyrou's investigation reveals a combination of factors that allowed Holmes to deceive investors, partners, and patients for over a decade: she surrounded herself with high-profile board members (George Shultz, Henry Kissinger, James Mattis) whose names provided credibility but who lacked the technical expertise to evaluate her claims; she exploited Silicon Valley's culture of 'fake it till you make it' and the secrecy that passes as proprietary protection; she controlled information flow within the company so that employees who worked on different parts of the system couldn't piece together the complete picture; she used aggressive non-disclosure agreements and legal threats against employees who raised concerns; and she cultivated a messianic narrative about disrupting healthcare that made investors and partners want to believe. The fraud was finally exposed not through regulatory oversight but through journalism.
What happened to Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos?
After Carreyrou's Wall Street Journal reports in 2015 raised serious questions about Theranos's technology, the company was investigated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which found that the company's blood-testing laboratory posed 'immediate jeopardy to patient health and safety' — leading to sanctions that effectively ended Theranos's clinical laboratory operations. The company dissolved in 2018. Holmes and former Theranos president Ramesh 'Sunny' Balwani were indicted for wire fraud in 2018. Holmes was convicted in January 2022 of four counts of criminal fraud against investors and sentenced to eleven years and three months in federal prison. Balwani was convicted on all twelve counts in July 2022 and sentenced to nearly thirteen years.
