Ian McEwan's Atonement (2001) is his most celebrated novel and one of the most celebrated British novels of the twenty-first century — a story of a thirteen-year-old girl's false accusation in 1935, its devastating consequences through Dunkirk and wartime London, and the elderly novelist trying to atone for what she did.
