As I Lay Dying (1930) is William Faulkner's most formally inventive short novel — fifteen narrators, including the dead Addie Bundren herself, telling the story of the Bundren family's darkly comic journey across Mississippi to bury their matriarch. Written in six weeks while Faulkner worked night shifts at a power plant, it is one of the most audacious formal experiments in American fiction and, paradoxically, one of his most accessible major works.
