Anxious People is structured as a farce — the bank robber is incompetent, the hostages are absurd, the detectives are father and son with a difficult relationship — and it is frequently very funny. It is also about suicide, grief, financial ruin, and loneliness, and it lands the emotional turn in its final act without feeling like it earned it cheaply.
Should I read A Man Called Ove before Anxious People?
They are entirely independent — you can read either one without the other. However, many readers find that reading A Man Called Ove first gives them a clearer sense of Backman's register (comic-melancholy character study with a late emotional gut-punch), which makes Anxious People easier to trust when the novel seems to be doing something strange.
