About Another Country

James Baldwin's Another Country (1962) is a standalone novel beginning with the suicide of Black jazz drummer Rufus Scott in New York, following the large cast of his friends — Black and white, gay and straight — as they try to understand what happened and to live with what they themselves are. Baldwin's most ambitious and formally complex novel.
