Arkady Martine's Teixcalaan series is a Hugo Award–winning space opera duology following Mahit Dzmare, the ambassador from a tiny independent mining station, who arrives at the capital of the Teixcalaan empire to find that her predecessor was murdered. Mahit carries a neurological implant containing a copy of her predecessor's memories — which may be failing. The series draws on Byzantine imperial history (Martine is a Byzantine historian) and explores empire, assimilation, identity, and the appeal of belonging to something vast and beautiful. Both novels won the Hugo Award for Best Novel.
