Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove (2012) is a complete standalone novel. There is a follow-up, Anxious People (2019), set in the same Swedish universe with different characters, but it is entirely independent. A Man Called Ove follows Ove, a recently widowed 59-year-old man with rules for everything and contempt for everyone, who is planning to end his life — and is repeatedly interrupted by his new neighbors. The novel was an international bestseller and has been adapted twice into films.
