Isabel Allende's A Long Petal of the Sea (2019, English translation 2020) is a complete standalone novel. It is entirely independent of The House of the Spirits and Allende's other novels. A Long Petal of the Sea follows Victor Dalmau, a Republican army doctor, and Roser Bruguera, a young pianist, who flee Spain at the end of the Civil War in 1939 on a ship chartered by Pablo Neruda — the SS Winnipeg, which was a real historical ship that carried over 2,000 Spanish refugees to Chile. The novel follows them through their lives in Chile and the Pinochet coup of 1973.
